NEWS from keithschofield.com

01-19-07
hey, so I'm leaving tomorrow for 3 weeks to go to London. I'm going to direct a SUPERGRASS video. No offense to my other bands, I love all you guys, but I've been listening to Supergrass for almost 10 years and own all their albums. So yeah, awesome. I started a tumblog, or tlog, over at: keithschofield.tumblr.com. Soon I'm going to overhaul my site, add a bunch of the commercials that I've been slow to add, and then incorporate that tlogging shit in this small ass window. ||

12-31-07
hey, so here's my end of the year wrap up. Good times. I did a lot of commercials, only a few music videos. Hopefully more of both in 2008. I really got a finish some of these directors cuts and post this stuff.

hey, did anyone see the Wintergreen video at BUG? What was the reaction? ||

11-15-07
hey, finally, "Can't Sit Still" is getting some respect. The oft misunderstood will be playing at the Bug Film Event in London. This fest is the descendant of Antenna, which played the Goose vide. They play a lot of slick stuff so it's pleasantly surprising they want to play such a grimy video. ||

11-13-07
hey so we went to an AMC theatre to watch my Jennie-O commercial and a movie. As fate would have it, they played the commercials at the beginning without picture; just sound. So I HEARD the spot, but didn't see it. It's odd, the one time I actually want to watch the pre-trailer commercials, and no dice. Woe is me. Oh, and the movie, No Country for Old Men, was unbelievably excellent. That's 2 great movies in a week. Oh, and check out this funny video about how to repair DVDs w/ a microwave. Now why is that clip beloved but "Can't Sit Still" is still totally hated on? ||

11-08-07
hey, the Jennie-O turkey spots I directed are now on the youtubes - first one here, 2nd one here. And last year's "Turkey Wrestling" is now airing on TV and a bunch of AMC & Regal theatre chains in LA - so go to the movies. ||

11-04-07
hey, just shot. Wow, what a bizarre production. It was great working w/ Ryan, the label, Jill, all the dancers and the crew. Things seemed to go perfect until we lit a flare in the studio and all orange smoke broke loose. I got the idea it would be 'safe' from the Supergrass Kiss of Life video. It was, sort of. I just hope to God it ends up in the final cut, cause otherwise, damn. And I just saw 'Into the Wild.' I loved the book when I read it a few years ago, and while I'm not the biggest Sean Penn fan, I'll be damned he didn't make the best movie I've seen of 2007. Even Eddie Vedder made an awesome soundtrack - go figure! ||

10-22-07
hey long time. I shot another round of Jennie-O turkey commercials and next up gonna do a music video for Ryan Shaw. Should be fun. Gonna return to the all black limboland i used in my goose and pi videos. fun stuff. ||

10-02-07
hey I'm back in LA; the shoot with the Timberwolves went really well. We built a giant chair and some oversized basketballs. Those practical effects are fun. I added a little menu called "treatments" underneath the press section. It includes a bunch of treatments for music videos and commercials; as well as a handful of rejected treatments, some previously mentioned in this news section. Two new ones added are for the Bees and Novastar. The Novastar one is okay; but the Bees one I really really liked. The reason that both of these won't be recycled is because I've since seen videos which touch on similar themes, and these would come across as ripoffs; even though the ideas were formulated independently. ||

09-22-07
hey I'm in Minneapolis right now, gonna shoot a couple of spots for the NBA team the Minnesota Timberwolves. I'm sure right now some jock director is doing a Nintendo commercial; as the universe balances itself out. Oh, and the Wintergreen video- why won't you people make that shit viral? Grumble grumble.||

09-06-07
here's another one.... a brand new video: Wintergreen "Can't Sit Still" .... a youtube exxxclusive. Okay; 2 videos & a commercial in one week is enough; gonna let this lineup sit here for a while. Oh, I've also updated my youtube site so please be my youtube friend.||

08-29-07
alright 2 new videos posted; one for Minus the Bear and the other my McDonalds commercial. Also a special thanks to the almighty Videostatic for writing an awesome article on the whole shebang. You can read the MtB treatment here and the "Upside-down eyes" treatment here. Bonus camera tests: me playing a hamper and pulling a cup.||

08-14-07
so two commercials in the can including one for the company that made this and this. And now the Minus the Bear video is online so you know it will show up here super soon..... in glorious h.264 Quicktime!! (seriously the subterranean quality leaves one longing for youtube....).||

7-26-07
alright the minus the bear video is done. gonna premiere online sometime soon. otherwise, i'm in Belgium right now, gonna shoot a commercial starring a bunch of thumb-people. when I get home, I'm gonna do a McDonald's commercial.||

07-18-07
Every once in a while a new music video comes out that just mazes and amazes you.||

07-03-07
I saw Tarsem's new feature "The Fall" at the LA FilM Festival. Hot shit. Pan's Labyrinth meets the Princess Bride meets the Wizard of Oz, all decked out in flamboyant Tarsem outfits. We then went to the music video screening; where they played the Goose video. As much as I love the youtubes and Internets, it sort of has killed the concept of music video screenings. Each year the audience size and number of directors showing up has slowly diminished. Otherwise, just editing stuff and eating a lot of erotic cakes. ||

06-17-07
so we shot the video last weekend. The band is called I Hate Kate, word on the street they're changing their name to I Hate Keith. But seriously, thanks for everyone who helped out: Daniella, Terry, Tarin, Jongo, Rafiel, Hiromi, Josh, Mike, Mitch, Andy, Abteen, Ryan, Kadriya, and everyone else. ||

06-06-07
hey LA people, what are YOU doing this Sunday? June 10th? From 8am until sundown? Nothing? THEN YOU WILL BE IN A MUSIC VIDEO I AM DOING. It will be really fun. Watch this clip for inspiration. Guys only. sorry girls. Email me. ||

05-27-07
okay off to Seattle for a couple of days. Here's a brain teaser. Give me a word that can be read differently in a miror. Like - TimbA | AdmiT ... ObAMA | AMAdO .... bib | did ... OAT | TAO ... I'll even accept backwards Rs and Ns a la RedRuM. Here's a hint: AHIMOTUVWXY; S|Z ; L|J, b|d. Ready... go! ||

05-17-07
holy shit, I'm on PEREZ HILTON!!! well sorta. I've been known to dabble in video remixes and couldn't help messing around with that Times Square breakdancer kicking a toddler. I did a techno video game followup which I actually like better. But shit, viral videos... ||

05-16-07
hey, I'm going to do a Minus the Bear music video in Seattle at the end of the month. Don't believe me? Take a look at videostatic.... it's gonna be one of those "trick" videos where the only way I was able to explain it was with a 3d animatic. ||

05-07-07
until a week ago I had never heard of a band called the Chameleons. Peers of Echo & the Bunnymen, I think they sound like a cross between the Cure, the Jam and Wire's "154". I am smitten. it's always weird to find your new favorite band has been banished to the margins of music history a long time ago.... so yeah, listen to Nostalgia and then tell me to get back to work.||

04-28-07
hey- good news; I'm going to be doing a series of Hard 'n Phirm videos for Superdeluxe.com! Good thing I saved that robot for all these years. It's an ambitious project so I'll be looking for a lot of peeps - please email me if you edit, do motion graphics or have access to a barn. ||

04-22-07
Update: here's what I came up with: kylie.gif .... meh. It treats each line/sine as a seperate person and doesn't convey the repetition aspects. Damn you, Gondry

04-18-07
I once made graphs to illustrate the math behind the One Block Radius video. Not sure why; probably just some technical mumbo-jumbo to razzle dazzle. The two videos I compared it to were inspirations - Spike Jonze's The Pharcyde's "Drop" and Ruben Fleischer's DJ Format "Vicious Battle Raps." I was really happy to apply Calculus (ya know, slopes and shit), finally in my life. Okay, enough talking about 2 year old videos (I really gotta get rolling on some new shit).... the question is - what would be the graph of Gondry's Kylie Minogue's "Come into my world" ? If x=time, y= ?? That's what I spent today trying to figure out.||

03-26-07
I once got into an argument with Josh Fowler about the Dark Side of the Moon syncing up with the Wizard of Oz. I watched it briefly was underwhelmed. My main argument was a technical one. When Pink Floyd recorded their album in 1973 there were no VCRs, so to properly sync to the film they would need a 35mm copy of it on a projector. The Wizard of Oz is an American film, shot at 24fps. In the UK, films run at 25fps. So - if they're running an American film through a UK projector, it would never sync up to what would eventually become a US film transferred to US video. Anywayyyy.... the pi third wave brought about this ridiculous sync video.... further proves my Dark Side of Oz argument. ||

03-18-07
Rejected Treatment Theatre - where I post my not-great-not-awful rejected treatments. Not awful cause those would be too embarassing. Not great cause those I'm sure reuse. But now, maybe this is a reason to abandon flat ideas forever and try some new shit.
Band of Horses "The Great Salt Lake" - I rarely write treatments for songs I've previously heard; and the Horses were atypical because I became a big fan of their demos months before they released their album (check out the 10-24-05 entry). So, I reached out to the band and met them and their manager at an Okkeril River show. Kept in touch, and months later I wrote on their first single, The Funeral. My idea was pretty good but I was mildly relieved I didn't get it - the whole idea was really unsafe and I always get freaked out at the idea of having crewmembers get injured.
Anyway, I also wrote on their 2nd single, the Great Salt Lake, which can be read here. Another rehash of an anthropomorphic protagonist going on a journey and shit. Oddly, this whole thing was inspired by cheesy murals painted on vans. Dumb. Fun fact: that first van picture is actually Wintergreen's tour van.
The video ended up going to a director I know who had an interesting, deserving concept. Unfortunately, that fell through when the band decided they wanted to play baseball in their clip -and with a new director put together this clip. It's not awful but it's completely forgettable. But a van come to life? Now THAT'S a music video.
Next up: NOVASTAR

03-14-07
hey it's pie day. the one day a year when i get people to visit my pie recipe website. here's how I make boston cream pie. 1. get a pie crust. 2. fill it with chocolate pudding. 3. but the other crust stuff on top. 4. that's it.
....and the pi video is on the front page of youtube. Woohoo, third wind! Milk it. Though starting to feel bad for those kids; they've all grown up and i'm sure they'd like to put this behind them. ||

03-02-07
okay I just posted a new press article; the Goose video was featured in shots issue 98. shots is a bi-monthly magazine and dvd that showcases International creative advertising and music videos. They featured the Notwist video back in the day in their "new directors" section. Thanks for the scan, Terry! ||

02-27-07
okay we shot the wintergreen video and i finished that candy commercial. as proof, here is an image of wintergreen buying kitty litter. thanks to everyone who helped out: emily, chance & terry.... I'm going to add a new song to the mixtape, from El Perro del Mar - whom I've retroactively added to my#3 album of 2006. Though this song isn't on the album, it's appropriate for this time of year: "Oh What a Christmas" ||

02-11-07
okay gonna start writing again. been too long. some news: we're gonna do another wintergreen video. it's all about drugs. it will be cool. i just got back from mexico. while walking around puetro vallarta I was describing this video - we then had to stop at an Internet cafe to watch it. ummmm what else... the makers of The Best Album of All Time have a new mix online that everyone should download (or stream): The Avalanches "Brainz Teaser" ... at the 3:00 mark might be the next "broomstick".... ||

01-13-07
I had no idea WE were being filmed. ||

12-22-06
hey okay some quick end of the year lists. Best albums, in order:
1. Ghostface Killah - "Fishscale"
2. Grizzly Bear - 'Yellow House'
3. El Perro del Mar - s/t
4. J Dilla - "Donuts"
5. Sunset Rubdown - 'Shut Up Am I Dreaming'
6. Muse - "Black Holes and Revelations" (c'mon it's a ridiculouslty overblown prog rock masterpiece)
7. the Junior Boys "So This is Goodbye"

A few non-2006 albums I only just got this year: Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love & Peppertree - s/t (le French Radiohead). And I actually really liked the Thom Yorke album even though that sort of sounds predictable. But I really hated it when I first got it.

my top songs of 2006 (with 4 just added to the mixtape):
1. Grizzly Bear "Knife"
2. Panda Bear "Carrots"
3. Junior Boys "In the Morning"
4. Of Montreal "The Past is a Grotesque Animal"
5. Tommy Guerero "Just Ain't Me"
6. Ill Gotten Gains "Spirit of 76"
7. The Concretes "Chico (Avalanches Remix)"

and.... the best music videos of the year.
1. Captain Ahab "You Want Me" Dir: Lawrence Klein
1. Rinôçérôse "Cublicle" Dir: Alex & Liane
3. Klaxons "Golden Skans" Dir: Saam
4. Deichkind "Ich Betäube Mich" Dir: Alex & Liane
5. All American Rejects "Move Along" Dir: Marc Webb
6. Emily Haines "Doctor Blind" Dir: Jaron Albertin

needless to say Alex & Liane are my pick for Director(s) of the Year. But I watched the Captain Ahab video more than anything else. Also, check out the Antville Awards - some awesome stuff. Goose got nominated for best Performance video! A'ight seeya in 2007. ||

12-07-06
hey, I bet you never expected to hear the phrase GRAMMY-NOMINEE KEITH SCHOFIELD: The Death Cab for Cutie DVD "Directions" was nominated for best Long Form Music video. Of course, they haven't listed the directors as indivdual nominees, but then again, they don't list who played bass on Record of the Year, but we all know that bass player deserves some sort of certificate. I put my odds at getting an 'official' nominee at 30% and my odds at getting an invite to the Grammys at 0.00001%. UPDATE: okay apparently there is a "51% rule" which means only a director who directs more than 51% of the footage gets nominated. Argh, I'm never gonna win a fucking Grammy. ||

12-04-06
hey is your appetite for newspieces on turkey commercials insatiable? Then you are in luck. ||

11-28-06
hey, here's that clip of Good Morning America watching the Jennie-O "Wrestling" commercial. Now, go to your water cooler and discuss with a co-worker. (thanks for tivo-ing, Bill). ||

11-22-06
hey everyone, go back in time and tape good morning america. They apparently did a piece on one of the Jennie-O commercials. Or maybe someone Tivo-ed it? Bill? meh it will be up on youtube soon. ||

11-09-06
hey I posted 2 of the spots I did for Jennie-O Turkey. Be sure to to also contribute to their viralification on youtube (Woman vs. Turkey, Bubble Bath). ||

11-03-06
hey Goose is playing in the Antenna in the UK. Antenna inspired the US-based Res Screenings and has launched the careers of many directors. This unfortunately is the last Antenna ever, so I guess I will never know what it's like. Unless someone wants to fly me out. And put me up. And be my translator. ||

10-22-06
hey Marie Antoinette is the best movie I've seen this year (so far). But take these points into consideration: 1. I did not have the highest of expectations. 2. I hate costume dramas. 3. Just about everyone we talked to afterwards HATED the movie. 4. I loved Lost in Translation and Virgin Suicides. 5. I loved the soundtrack. Oh and album of the year is Grizzly Bear "Yellow House" - I'm calling that one right now. When is the "Knife" video coming out? ||

10-11-06
hey so I'm editing the turkey commercials. stuff looks good. here's my treatment for the goose video. lotsa flash animatics. notice no mention of goo or wrecking the stage. ||

10-03-06
FINALLY!!! the goose video is posted. that's me sitting on my ass for a month slowly doing a cutdown (a first? yeah...) don't worry I also posted the abridged version. oh and thanks for the intern response - next time email me directly! or at least leave contact info... I only saw those comments way too late. oh yeah we shot the turkey spots. they went great. those should be up in a few weeks. oh, and 'hey.' ||

09-24-06
hey I'm back. Well I've been back for a bit. Shooting this turkey commercial this Friday. Hey who in LA wants to intern with me for this shoot??? Anyone? ||

09-11-06
hey whoa alright update. how bout a list:
1. this is the best video of the year. too bad that year was 1981.
2. i've been planning on doing a real youtube profile for a bit but fuck i can't figure out how to get decent sync sound. here's my 'unofficial' messy one - um look at the favorites and the mashups i did and shit. jarts fo'eva yo.
3. I'm going to San Francisco tomorr' to do a commercial for Jennie-O turkey, be back in a week or so.
4. Goose is done, yeah, but that doesn't mean i can post it right away. Ya know, labels and timetables and stuff.
5. yeah if I wrote essays about music videos I would go on at length about this U2 video from the Batman Forever soundtrack directed by Kevin Godley & Maurice Linnane. Why have I watched it so many times? If anyone remembers Batman Forever, it sucked, but this video took all these scenes out of context and made it look like an awesome movie. The animation is great too.
6. speaking of 911 this was the best thing I've read in a while on the subject. (link goes to more links).||

09-05-06
hey all done with the GOOSE video. will be posted soon. wow that's a long time without any updates. um how about some mp3s for the mixtape.... Tommy Guerrero "Just Ain't Me" and Grizzly Bear "Knife"... ||

08-19-06
hey i'm back. yo goose worked out well... edit this week and then post it or something. hmm what else... nah much. oh i went to pukkelpop and saw beck & radiohead. hot shit.||

08-11-06
hey i'm out. back to belgium. no fucking ipods or gatorade on the plane but here take a look at my video ipod playlist. Are you on it? Oh and I added the Axion commercial. See if you can spot "Susan" from the pi video. Alright; off to benelux. ||

08-05-06
hey remember that Wintergreen video I directed? And then subsequently just posted links to blog entries talking about the video? Like, in lieu of any new material I just endlessly talk about old shit? Yeah, well here's another one, perhaps the oddest yet. My only thought on this video is that there may be an alternate reality where these voices are the funniest thing in the world and are impersonated my millions of junior high kids. Even weirder is that I couldn't find any more beavis-and-butthead-style videos by these guys which doesn't really make sense. ||

08-01-06
hey GO HERE NOW. OMG, LOL.... thanks to defamer for the tip-off. and then I'm going back to Belgium to shoot a video for the band GOOSE. more details to follow.... ||

07-25-06
hey!: Hi Keith Schofield, I'm Tommy White from the original cast of the 1970's PBS show ZOOM. I just found your "Pi" video and think it would be perfect for a ZOOM retrospective I am doing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin Texas on August 15. Would it be possible to get a Beta SP copy for the screening? Regards, Tommy White, Age 48. ||

07-24-06
hey but we need a band. who makes songs that sound like the rockafella skank? ||

07-23-06
hey the billion-hits-on-youtube is back on, so it seems! ||

07-20-06
hey the avalanches are back with some remixes but this concretes one is the best. ||

07-19-06
hey so I think I'm officially dropping the million-hits-on-youtube™ idea cause legal issues and cost and well it would've been pretty retarded too. ||

07-18-06
hey i bought some freezer pops that have been in my fucking freeze for 4 days and are still unfrozen goddamn unpowerful freezer. ||

07-17-06
hey i'm getting rid of the pi-robot that's been sitting in my closet forever. ||

07-16-06
hey so that's it I'm gonna end these long coherent entries. ||

07-14-06
hey I'm back in the US and whatnot; commercial is all finished. Europe was really cool; the whole post process was really quick but fun and the commercial will be posted soon at Roses are Blue and Caviar. In other news..... Israel invades Lebanon. Fuck. My friend Joanne arrived in Beiruit a few weeks ago and is trying to get out. Does anyone know anyone in the State Department? Pull a few strings? Arggggh what an awful situation. What happened to the Cedar Revolution? Wasn't Lebanon on the right track? ||

07-01-06
hey i'm outta here. the shoot was awesome, everyone kicked everyone else's ass and now i'm off to the EU where the fourth of july means nothing so see you all in a couple weeks and read this mp3 blog entry and hit me with some ideas for songs. ||

06-23-06
hey no surprise that I would do a search for Keith Schofield on youtube but did I really expect to find this? ||

06-21-06
hey so pi this weekend; Sunday, Jun 25th at 2:30 pm at the Italian Cultural Institute (heyyyyy, wassamattawityou?), 1023 Hilgard Ave, Westwood, CA. Here's a link to the other videos playing. Ummm what else. Shooting in a week. We did some camera tests and stuff is looking good. Um been listening to the Pipettes and Junior Boys. Hot shit indeed. Oh and a shout-out in Entertanment Weekly coming soon apparently... thanks to Homestar Runner! I can only assume people thinking that Matt Condor in the Pi video was dressed as Strongbad.... at any rate, i need to make some more videos.... any one know any bands? ||

06-14-06
hey! I'm shooting a commercial at the end of the month in LA! Roses are Blue! Then off to Belgium to edit it! In PAL! 25fps! Oh and after that NO MORE MUSIC VIDEOS EVER!!! Just kidding!! Unfortunately my million-hits-on-youtube™ video is getting pushed back a month. But it will happen. Just later. Hey! ||

6-6-6
hell my favorite troll Vijay and Eli (star of the DJ Format & Fiona Apple videos) have a new mp3 blog. Nobody goes there because the music is awful, and so their their only way to get traffic is if I give them a shout-out. Well, here. In other news.... I haven't posted a video link in a while cause I've been waiting for Captain Ahab's "U Want Me." There are no other videos that need to be seen, ever. Now if Lawrence Klein could just direct an Ariel Pink video we'd be all set. I actually wrote a treatment for "Alisa" that I was going to "solicit" as a zero-budget video but had to abort when the Death Cab video happened. ||

06-01-06
hey Pi is playing at the LA Film Fest. Hot shit. Good lineup too! Not holding my breath to meet Martin de Thurah... but perhaps Ace Norton? He did my favorite on the death cab dvd - Someday you will be Loved (not to be confused with Crooked Teeth, playing here). In music video news I'm (magically?) writing a buncha treatmetns this week. Fun shit. In rap news this hefty records mix album is amazing. I've been kind of bummed the last 5 years cause I just don't find many rap singles I like. I think it's the direction the music has taken (I blame the Neptunes) which has moved towards sparseness and synthesizers. At any rate; there's still good rappers; they just need to throw in some soul samples or glitches. Madlib and G-Dini can only do some much.||

05-23-06
hey so I saw this and it appears that the Wintergreen video was mentioned in the muthuhfuckin Guardian... though I can't find any other mention online. Did this guy transcibe this from the print edition? Only an Economist shout-out would be cooler. I added a few more comic strips but I'm convinced nobody likes them. And some mo mixtape songs, 14, 15 and 16. ||

05-17-06
hey so i'm back. 1. We found an awesome bathroom at ARENA, a club across the street from my old haunt, Hollywood Center Studioes. 2. We got a copy of Urotsukidoji from Vidiots; that's where I first rented it in 1998. Probably the same copy. Really, it's not a very good movie. 3. I ended up going witht the decidely NON-16bit music of Mega Man 2. Yup. Here's a pic from the short. Everytime I have a shoot I stop shaving; and that's the only time it seems I ever get my picture taken. So people must think I have a beard all the time. But really, I don't. ||

05-07-06
hey somebody put the Wintergreen video on youtube's front page. Hot shit! Second wind! Bad sound quality! ||

05-04-06
hey so there's a couple things we need for the shoot that only YOU can help us with.
1. We need a public restroom location - $500!: The scene involves an occupied toilet stall; and then a character who has to wait next to a bathroom attendant at the sink. We need a decently sized public restroom and a layout where a toilet stall is across from the sink. Here's a visual reference. Doesn't have to be EXACTLY like this but any of these floor layouts would be great. Some ideas: high schools, office buildings, restaurants, clubs, bars. We will pay $500!! Take some of the cash as a finder fee for yourself. We will shoot either this Sunday, May 7th or Monday, May 8th.
2. We need a copy of Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend on VHS. Just to borrow; we'll mail it back to you.
3. Can anyone recommend any good Sega Genesis/Super NES music? Something action oriented, while retaining a cheesy video game music quality (Streets of Rage is the first one to come to mind.)
By the way, the short is called "Toilets, Hentai and 16-bit Video Game music." ||

hey so here's what I'm doing now: a short. I'm doing it VERY SOON. You can help me. Here's what I need: An actor. Eric - 15-30. an overweight Asian male. Loudmouthed, obnoxious, dorky. No acting experience necessary. Here's a visual reference. Seriously - anyone you can think of please email me or leave a comment. I'll explain more in due time. ||

04-24-06
hey I found my scanner so I added a new section - comic strips. Give this a few weeks until I lose interest.||

04-16-06
hey so SPIN magazine did an article on me for the May 2006 print issue. I think it came out very nicely. Read it here or view the full page here. ||

04-11-06
hey the death cab "directions" dvd came out today. go buy it. Or just watch the video here. Thanks to everyone again for all their hard work. We loved working with you. Sincerely, Keith Haverbrooks, Eric Schoman and Jeff Mayfield (the collective known as Keith Schofield).||

04-09-06
hey what's this? Yep I'm giving up my job working the assembly line at the local plastic factory to pursue my life long dream of sitting on my ass waiting to direct a commercial. I've known EPs Michael Sagol & Tom Weissferdt for a while now; they ran the DJ Format from their company; RABLA-er Eric David Brown was the producer. Exciting times ahead - and I exagerate the ass-sitting. ||

hey Spike Jonze apparently came up with an Eminem video concept that Marshall thought was the worst thing he had ever read. Michel Gondry wrote an amazing Weezer soccer video that the band passed to do a generic clip. I wish more directors shared their rejected treatments. The main reason they don't is because if it's any good, they want to save it for later; and if it sucks, then there's no reason to share it. I wrote on the Mates of State "Fraud in the 80s" song. It was right before I was about to shoot the Death Cab video; and at 2am before it was due I came up with this idea, which is sort of in the same vein as the Wintergreen video. Read the rejected treatment here. I can't say it's the most brilliant idea ever nor is the writing very good but it could have been an interesting video. At any rate, the director they went with (Arno Salters) turned out a neat stop-motion video clip that couldn't be more different. I think it turned out really well although by law I have to hate it so I'll just say it's hard to judge a Mates of State video without Devastatin' Dave in it. ||

03-29-06
hey there's a screening this weekend of Wintergreen & Pi at this thing called dublab presents...A LABRAT MATINEE III. So if you feel compelled to see these videos on a screen - well, here ya go. ||

03-25-06
hey so me and some peeps went to go see Wintergreen last nite. Fun stuff. Someone yelled out "Atari rules!" after they played "When I Wake Up" so I figure my work is done. Hopefully that dude bought a thousand CDs. Cuch & Terry and I were talking and an idea came up for a music video to co-direct as a collective. It's a really stupid, simple concept that is oh-so trendy. So simple that anyone could do it, and it would be just as popular. So stupid, 96% of antville will HATE it. So trendy, it's pandering to 14-year-old girls. But - I'm gonna call it now - 1,000,000 hits on youtube. So - anyone knows any bands in LA? Ideally something upbeat and even dance oriented, like a Daft Punk / Cut Copy / Basement Jaxx... Clock is ticking.||

03-23-06
hey so everyone saw the Shining trailer; and then a sea of imitators. Thrown in the mix were these standouts for the Fast and the Curious and Mount Brokeback and now this new one for Blue Velvet - which is when I learned it was all the same guy, Robert Ryang from ps260. Hot shit indeed. So.... I've wanted to do my own trailer remix for a while but haven't so I did this retarded shit with the Da Vinci code trailer....yeah it's stupid BUT it did get mentioned on defamer. ||

03-19-06
hey wow it's been a few days already. Not sure I've got anything exciting to say so I'll just post the treatment for Wintergreen "When I Wake Up". Did I call the boing boing thing? And oddly enough 30,000 is the amount it peaked at. But then, I turn to youtube, and notice two girls lip synching a Pixies song gets almost two million hits... and don't get me started on the Myspace: The Movie kid. Dude is launching a clothing line! What the fuck is that? ||

03-14-06
hey this is the best video I've seen in a long time. The less I know about it the better. Seriously someone get this kid a cop sshow where all he does is what he does. ||

03-13-06
hey mo press, this time in English: Electronic Gaming Monthly... and here's the mentioned email from Howard Scott Warshaw, the E.T. programmer. I guess for the video to come out in late January; we're only now seeing the printed mag mentions. There's one more coming unless the inevitable happens.... And some mailbag shit: "Hey there Keith - I have just been checking out your video for Wintergreen…nice work. But you probably know that already. Anyway, thought I would mention a site that I am currently trying to get off the ground – if you like it, maybe give it a name check on your site News section? Cheeky to ask, I know, but hopefully you won’t hate me for trying. So check it out: www.ravetorock.com..... Thanks, MARK." Cheeky indeed, Mark. Oh and seeing as we're both hot now I added the theme song from Katamari Damacy to the mixtape. ||

03-09-06
hey two things - I've been on a youtube kick - yeah the quality isn't mindblowing but they have EVERYTHING. Here's a video I mentioned a while ago by a sorta lame band directed by the Glazer-esque and WAY underappreciated Jamie Thraves. And here's an interview I did for the German video magazine GEE. Full translation to come but to start Kreuzfeuer = Crazy Fire; Besucher = Bitch Sucker; Ghostface Killah = der Geistgesicht Mörder. ||

03-07-06
hey you know when you've got no time left to come up with an idea, and then at the last possible minute it just pops into your head and everything works out? That shit is hot. Lemme hit that. Nice. Yo Crash sucked. Hey I got a new couch and love seat. Shout out to Gov' for putting his ping pong table aspirations on hold to help me get it through my window. Here's what the couch looks like. ||

03-02-06
So I've been really busy with work, cleaning my apartment, flaking on parties, eating Thai food with friends, watching Douglas Sirk films on the big screen, eating vegetarian Indian food, celebrating my own-belated birthday at work. The management at Sears Holdings has maintained that the merger was about more than real estate and stock prices. in the meantime, i'm stuck with this stupid dial-up earthlink. don't get me wrong, i'm just happy to get online, but it means i have to sit on the couch in the living room whilst connected to the phone line, instead of in the comfort of my own bedroom and completely wireless (and naked). Does anyone else see the irony of this? I mean, Enron's bankruptcy ruined the retirement plans of millions of Americans, not to mention the endowment incomes of countless universities and arts institutions.

*this entry was a mashup of previous released written material by Terry "Not Hyunh" Huynh, Mitch "Glitch" Glaser, Matt "White" White & Nate "with an 8" Madsen. Now, you will listen to these new mixtape songs, Smog "Ex-Con" & Ill Gotten Gains "Spirit of 76." ||

02-26-06
hey so mo slow updates. It's not that I don't have stuff to write about, it's just that I'm paranoid of a screwing up everything by HYPE-ing it all up..... it's been known to happen befo'. I guess I wouldn't be paranoid about mentioning BLOWFLY - he popped up on the Avalanches early mix CD Gimix and then I found his site. Before there was Kool Keith, Old Dirty Bastard or 2 Live Crew - before there was hip hop, for that matter - there was Blowfly. The Avalanches 'Since I left You' is my favorite album of all time. Better than OK Computer, better than Pet Sounds. The fact that they still haven't done a followup is worrisome.... they're turning into the next My Bloody Valentine. ||

02-19-06
hey so I'm working on treatments and starting to think that many a great video can be summed up as the ______ video. The Happy Days video. The Furries video. The Legos video. This is not to say that all great videos can be simplified to a googol search - but if you had no idea the artist or title of Chemical Brothers "Let Forever Be" - how would you find it on youtube? With a nod at leaning towards the trendy and pop culture oriented... I'm making a list. So far got Nerf, Uwe Boll, Soduku. The hits keep coming. ||

02-11-06
hey so yeah back. I shot and finished a Death Cab for Cutie video; the 13th and final video for their Directions project. It's the song "Jealousy Rides with Me" one of 2 bonus tracks exlusively for the DVD release. It was an insanely tight schedule but everything (magically?) worked out. My only regret on the project was that, due to the last-minute nature of my participation - I missed my one and only chance to ever get into Pitchfork. Ah well. It's an amazing group of directors and I can't wait to see how the project is received as a whole. I'll spare describing the shoot because Terry summed it up so well. Big thanks to everyone involved: Aaron Stewart-Ahn (best known as the director of the excellent plug-winning Decemberists "16 Military Wives" video), co-creator of Directions who was instrumental in getting me on board along with Jill & Noah at Atlantic Records. Then Yamani going all magic with the executive producing; pi-producer BP Cooper working that magic budget; Brett Juskalian perfroming magic tricks as well as working the DP magic; plus more magic from Co-Producer Logan Mulvey, First AC Jeff Dorer, Second AC Genaro 'Flaco' Arroyo, Key Grip Johnny Ching, Asst. Editor/Effects Phillip Kimsey. And big thanks to the cast for putting up with my crazy basketball-style of directing: Magical Jordan Craven, Magical Mike Cuculich, Magical Tyler Fowler, Magical-and-easy-to-spell Terry hUYunh, Magical Rashi Kaslow, Magical Victoria Monteleone, Magical Drew "Wintergteen" Mottinger, Magical Eric Patten, Magical Nick Pritchard, Magical Milissa Skoro, Magical Jenn Strand, Magical Lydia Tavera and Magical Alexis Teague. I'm not sure if/when the video will be posted because of the timed-release nature of the Directions project so for now just watch the old shit again. ||

01-30-06
hey so wow 100,000 hits in a week the Wintergreen video is mad popular thanks to Boing Boing, Digg, Joystiq, Atari Age and.... Der Spiegel? Umm seeing as how I milk shit for weeks I'll have many more posts about the response from this video. The most surreal response I got was from Howard Scott Warshaw, the E.T. game programmer, seen shaking hands w/ Spielberg in the video: Dear Keith, I think you did a really nice job with this video. I’ve been producing/directing for the last few years myself and I really like the work you did here. It definitely tells the story. And whether or not the story is true has little to do with how well it is told. :) It’s a great piece of work and I am honored that you chose my game as a subject. I never feel bad about people poking fun at ET. Having done Yar’s (frequently rated one of the best) and ET (you know how that goes) I figure I have the greatest range of any designer in history. :) And the only thing worse than having your work panned is having your work forgotten. The idea that this is still a topic of interest after more than two decades still makes me smile, whatever the reference. If you like, go ahead and post a link to onceuponatari.com for further info and we will link back to your video. Congrats on a nice piece, HSW, Howard Scott Warshaw. Perhaps I'll get an email from Steven Spielberg next.... ||

01-23-06
hey so a lot of stuff happening but up-to-the-minute-news is gonna have to wait a few days cause I'm shooting this weekend. Film, not guns. For now, the Wintergreen video is posted. Please watch it. Josh Fowler was the DP, and the crew was Terry Huynh (also editor) and Mike Cuculich. Wintergreen was really fun to work with and very good at digging holes and playing Atari. ||

01-17-06
hey I was going to write something eventually. Just working on stuff and being gone and not caring about this and whatnot. Here, all the pi ytmnd's I kept seeing.... man they love Steve. Also - the DJ Format video is getting a second wind.... and the new Wintergreen video is gonna be up within a week.... and yeah that means I'm going to take the Atom video down.||

12-26-05
hey so end of the year and whatnot. How bout best of 05 lists? Best albums of the year: 1. Out Hud - Let Us Never Speak of it Again; 2. Animal Collective - Feels; 3. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary; 4. Quasimoto - The Further Adventures of Lord Quas; 5. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois. Best Movie: Me and You and Everyone We Know. Best Music Video: Carpark North "Human" Martin de Thurah; Runner-Ups: Supergrass "Low C" Hammer & Tongs; Armand van Helden "Into Your Eyes" Waverly; The Presets "Are You the One? Kris Moyes; Kennedy "Your Mama" Joel Lava; Fischerspooner "Never Win" Fischerspooner. Director of the Year: the Waverly Films collective: no director came close to having as many great videos. These dudes went to NYU Film School and also are 2 years younger than me so anyone that knows me as a hater can appreciate my appreciation. ||

12-18-05
hey slow to update. been going nonstop this week my improv group, TRAFFIC JAM, working up to last night's show. it went pretty well - glad a bunch of you could make it. Best part was Terry' & Mike's skit about how LA drivers never use their turn signal. Anyway wintergreen is coming along just fine, to be launched in early-mid january. so antville had a neat roundup of the best videos of the year, here, here and here. A lot of my earlier posts I got from antville so seems like we're all in step. The Carpark North video is the best of the year, and I concur. And the worst is here - I dunno, I didn't hate the Green Day "Wake Me Up" video; then again I didn't read too much into it. Thought the Bjork "Where is the Line" was the worst of all.... oh and somehow both 2005 Gondry videos ended up on the list though more in a "most dissapointing" way. Too bad. I think I've got Gondry-blinds on cause I really like every video he does - even if it's flawed I keep watching it until it sinks in. His new Kanye West video is no different - so many little bits that are so charming. ||

12-12-05
hey so how about a new mp3 for the mixtape by michael andrews from the me and you and everyone we know soundtack called boy moves the sun yeah that is a good soundtrack um i got no news just the same old same old uh how about a link to a good video and shit from hammer and tongs for supergrass ugh in real media or fucking windows media but it's good so just watch it. ||

12-07-05
hey no update for a while. Been working on graphics for the video and um making my list for best videos of 2005. Anyone reading this knows what my number 1 will be but who knows what lies for numbers 2 thru 10? It's really hard to say in someways. I don't have cable so I rarely see videos on TV. My whole list is culled from antville, shots and RES. If something's good, it will usually pop up on antville - but then again, a lot of that is biased against the music - I'll be pointed to every Arcade Fire video but probably not see a single video for.... um, Good Charlotte? Eh maybe that's a good thing. The other thing that sucks is that videos can take a long time to get seen; like that Kenna video for example. And the dilemna of "America we Stand As One" - did that come out in 2005? And, as the video I've watched more times than any other, and shown to more people - what does that qualify as? ||

11-30-05
hey I'm back in town and healthy again. So hopefully I don't sound like I'm bragging or some nerd or jerk but I got a video ipod or "vipod" as the webloggers are calling it and yeah these things are dope (though I already managed to scratch up the screen, ecchh). Videos that look "eh" online look amazing here. Jeez what a nerd or jerk. ....So revisiting and ripping a lot of old videos - Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet" might be my most watched video ever. On a similar note - and there's this dude that I was pointed to by antville - Paul Robertson - as someone described, Neo Geo-era graphics. Amazing stuff. In other news..... um Wintergreen video before the end of the 2005 fiscal year?||

11-20-05
hey here's a pretty good interview with hard n phirm... most of the stuff I had no idea about - it also includes a nice shout-out and a, uh, link to this page, sort of.... um, what else.... I got the flu - so been laying low and watching movies about Hitler, Krumping and the New Mexico Campaign - actually, I can't believe it took me this long to see the Good, the Bad and the Ugly - it was pretty awesome.... I always think if I can lose the dayjob I'll catch up on the hundreds of movies I should have seen but never have. ||

11-16-05
hey just kicking it working on some treatments. Doing research I came across this site and these pictures 1 2 3. See, the ideas just flow like bread. Um I'll also post this Microphones mp3 I Am Bored cause I just saw them/him. Oh and here's the One Block Radius Treatment if anyone's interested. ||

11-10-05
hey: "Hi. Your film has stirred up a lot of controversy on the Kate Bush groups as she has just released an album with a track called Pi where during the song, she recites Pi. They're saying that you got the idea from her as your characters are wearing tall pointed hats and cloaks almost identical to those worn in the video of Sat In Your Lap from around 1980. Do you know of the video or Kate Bush? Thanks - Dan." ...what's even weirder is the same night someone told me that Kate Bush was Ariel Pink's favorite artist. ||

11-07-05
hey so we have a new Gondry White Stripes video and it's awesome oh and in honor of Mike Love suing Brian Wilson again I was going to add a beach boys song to the mixtape but couldn't find the song I wanted so instead here's beach bots Zoot Woman and Caribou. ||

10-31-05
hey so the actor who played Steve in "Pi" is on myspace and posts a dozen bulletins a day - here are a few recent subject-lines: what if i died 2day, wtf were is ever1.............im so bored, what if i died 2morrow, talk 2 me, darkness consumes her, im bored, im a hooker, please talk 2 me, blue, i wud jump in front of a bullet 4, wtf, im a peaceful emo, how 2 tell if ur gay, talk 2 me, what would u do, i love u baby. He said it was cool if I posted a link to his page here - so please, take a look, send him messages / fanmail / comments / paintball tips / etc. ||

10-29-05
hey OMG I recompressed the DJ Format, One Block Radius & Notwist videos in be-fuck-dazzling QT7 - take a look. OMG the Notwist video is half the size and half the size. OMG I'm working on some treatments for some interesting looking projects. OMG here are some more mixtape songs - both from the DIY series - The Nerves "When You Find Out" and Rich Kids "Ghosts Of Princes In Towers." OMG they're old songs from one-off bands that either sounds like the Strokes or the Shins. OMG here's one of the best videos I've seen in the last few months - The Presets "Are You the One?" Dir: Kris Moyes. OMG how do you pitch something like that? ||

10-24-05
hey so pi has gotten 100,000 hits - which means more people saw pi this month than were killed in auto accidents by a factor of 30. And I think we can all agree that's a good thing. Speaking of autos and unplanned occurences (though not an accident per se) here's a pic of us running out of gas on the Wintergreen shoot. Oh, and saw Band of Horses - excellent band, amazing show. Download those demos. Spread the word. ||

10-20-05
hey so pi is now on
ifilm along with this. Um, how about a quick FAQ?: You can get the mp3 at the itunes store. I know it's ridiculous for me to advocate paying for music but if they sell a lot of downloads I might get some kind of bonus. As for lyrics.... there ya go. The twins names are Hector & Diego - and they say them both at the same time and they are not conjoined. The video is a ZOOM homage w/ a dash of Electric Company though when watching the old clips I just can't help but think how cool their set was... also, you'll see where the jar came from. The wizards are inspired by the Beatles in Magical Mystery Tour. The wrestler is not Strong Bad - just a guy in a Mexican wrestler's mask. Damn I hope that doesn't ruin it for anyone. Um, any other questions? ||

10-16-05
hey so we just shot a video for this band Wintergreen. This band has it all - catchy songs, great hole-digging skills and they even offer roadside assistance. On top of that, they still have time to party till 8 in the morning in Arizona. Meanwhile, the rest of us went to eat dinner at Coco's (shout outs to): Josh "I will Boycott all forms of Media" Fowler (DP), Terry "Let me throw sand at it" Winn and Mike "Thanks for introducing me to Wolf Parade" Cuculich. We only got the 'green light' a week and a half ago.... just goes to show that all the pro-pro work goes on in the last week. ||

10-14-05
hey so Pi-October has overtaken DJ-Format-April as the highest traffic month this site has seen. Thanks in advance to Nate for having the skills to not pay the bills with this shit. Damn I'm fucking boring and tedious talking about backlinks and stats. Anyway..... it's amusing to read the messageboard feedback - some people think the video is new footage intercut w/ old stuff, some have made, uh, "fan art" - (Steve, $1.3 Million Chalet, robot), and some people have interpretations: "I dunno maybe i'm reading way to much into this, but this song and the visuals seemed like a warning of technology's impact on our culture. the kids wanting to learn more about the hard science of the universe, the kids being multi-cultural representing the races of the larger continents and even could hint as to specific countrys i.e. steve being a big oaf that loves pie - America? then the kid switching hats that also are multi-cultural in design may represent the internet or greater communication among the people of the world or globalization. The two wizards could be representing past belief structures. then the robot shows up and the kids are fucking overjoyed at the understanding of the science and technology and they start dancing around loving life, and the wizards just stand by while the kids cast off old beliefs in favor for technology. Then the rapper starts talking about screwing women and getting laid but applying the rules of pi to the story, kind of like a warping of knowledge or using the knowledge in a way that it wasn't intended. then the kids are still hanging with the robot but kinda look buzzkilled, then the one girl breaks off, as in she doesn't beleive in what the robot is spouting anymore, but she can't go back to the path of ignorance, she has gone too far, and wizards come back as if society will rebel against technology or wish for the simple days to return but the wizards get killed and the kids then shrink and go willingly into the book that spawned the warping of knowledge. dunno probably reading way to much out of this. thats my take on this though." ||

10-12-05
hey holyshit pi made blogsnow - seriously, I wasn't looking for backlinks - thought it peaked a few days ago. thanks to waxy... damn nobody likes quicktime 7. ||

10-10-05
hey I just went here yesterday w/ Gov' and we dug some holes and got our feet cut and huh, a ping pong table?? ||

10-08-05
hey finding this location is difficult ....also I've been on ebay recently so look at this item I just won. ||

10-05-05
hey people of Los Angeles - you read this:
***$300 IN CA$H!!!!***
We are looking for a Los Angeles area 70s style living room to shoot a scene for a short film. Oranges, browns, greens; unusual furniture, retro fixtures - the kitschier the better. Think Napoleon Dynamite's house. Maybe you've got a relative who hasn't redecorated in 30 years? We're open to ideas - just looking for something which is of another era. We need to shoot the entire room so if you've got a plasma TV or Ikea couch it will need to be moved.
It is a VERY small crew - 4 actors, 4 crew members a video camera and maybe some lights. No trailers, no generators, no trucks. This is NOT a Hollywood production.
We need to shoot this on Saturday, October 15th or Sunday, October 16th; 10am - 3pm. We are flexible shooting either day.
Please email me at hey-you. Sending photographs is a mad bonus yo. Also include your contact info and the city / neighborhood where the location is. I need to scout this weekend so hurry!!!! CA$H!!!!
We have a TOTAL of $300 for this location. $100 finder's fee for referring a house/apartment that we use, and $200 to the location owner (or, split it up any way the two of you see fit). If you happen to be the location owner, then you keep all $300. We can pay in CA$H. ||

10-02-05
hey so the next video I'm working on will be a mix of retreaded elements from the Notwist and DJ Format videos, with a bit of Stephen Spielberg thrown in. Not his style, but rather a photograph of him. To imagine the wonders, listen to this song by Francois de Roubaix and visualize.....

09-29-05
hey thanks to peoples for the nice words about pi. Somebody pointed out that the twins (Hector and Diego) were in a play called A Very Merry Unauthorized Scientology Pageant.... damn I wish I could have seen that. Um a couple things - the DJ Format video played at some European fests in the last few months - Mirrorball and Mecal. The Mecal lineup is pretty amazing; an Internacional showcase: Carpark North's "Human" by Martin de Thurah is so far my favorite video of 2005; another recent great is Fischerspooner "Never Win" by Warren Fischer y Jon Kane - funny; I HATE sound effects over the song in videos but I think it works great here. Also playing was Ruben's M.I.A. video which is worth checking out. So, if you can go back in time to Europe, um go. Actually, if you can do that, it'd probably be more fun to go see the Beatles or Joy Division. ||

09-25-05
hey so I posted the pi video - hope people aren't thrown off by the codecs. Seriously this Quicktime 7 H.264 codec is the shit. ummmm lemme give my shout outs. Hard 'N Phirm are Chris Hardwick (you know, the guy who was the host of Singled Out & Shipmates) and Mike Phirman. The rapper is Dragon Boy Suede. The kids were expertly played by Dabir, Meeghan, Mark, Molly, Mario & Tony... with Matt "the Flompet Funny Hour" Codner as the Wrestler... and Terry Huynh as "The Robot." Wünderproducer BP Cooper produced the fuck out of this video. Despite the limited budget, it was the biggest set and the most crew I've ever worked with. He also came up with the show name ZAP. Eduardo Cisneros was the amazing DP; we shot on HDV and super-8. And Shelly Alvarado (Production Designer), Rebecca McCabe (Costume Designer), Tana Rusitanonta (Sound), Matthew Kistenmacher (Gaffer), Bobby Lam (Best Boy Electric), Nathan Fetzer (Key Grip), Ayron Sequiera (Stills), and PAs: Saul Garcia, Jeshanah Naranjo, Louis Chernovsky, Umair Qadeer, Fernando Sanchez & Deja Brandeis. Thanks to Charles Wittenmeier for hooking us up w/ his studio and Michael, who introduced HnP to my work. Who else am I forgetting? ||

09-23-05
hey so I rearranged the whole comments mess. Still a mess? Mess.

09-21-05
hey just had the worldish premiere of the Pi video at Largo. It was a pretty awesome show and the video played great - I wish I had known ahead of time I could have hyped this shit up, sort of..... eh who am I kidding I couldn't promote a well qualifed employee. That being said, the video is done, the icons are made; posting any day now. How's that for hype? Not very good. Hey I posted a new mp3 - this has ended up on every pretentious mix tape I've ever made. The best song ever? Nobukazu Takemura "Let My Fish Loose" (Aphex Twin Mix). Yes. Yes it is. ||

09-19-05
hey so watching the new directors label DVDs.
Mark Romanek's is the best; even though I'd seen all his videos. I'd say 3 of his are the absoloute best in their genres - Jay-Z "99 Problems," NIN "Closer" and Johnny Cash "Hurt. I love Jonze and Gondry but you watch any of these three videos and you think no director could have done better.
Jonathan Glazer - I love his work but he doesn't have a ton and I've got just about everything on a VHS tape. Not very good extras.
Stephane Sednaoui has some very good videos, and some real clunkers - the worst is that he's missing one of his seminal works: Smashing Pumpkins' "Today" was a great, simple video that I imagine did as much for his career as anything.
Anton Corbijn, I gotta watch some more, cause right now I'm not sure I get his place in music videos - I could list half a dozen directors who would be more deserving of that slot (and I know some are in the next round): Garth Jennings, Dayton/Faris, Mike Mills, Jonas Akerland, Shynola, Francis Lawrence. ||

09-16-05
hey added a new mp3, the universally acknowledged genius of Ariel Pink. (the work in progress mixtape is here.) So pi will be linked any day now. Well, it's up already if you got any web skills you can find it. Yeah these longer blog entries are a trip. Hmm what to talk about. Pancakes. I've been watching the director's label DVDs and I'm thinking the 90s were for music videos what the 60s were for rock music. There's never going to be another Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Doors, etc. This decade, we're lucky to get a Creedence Clearwater Revival or Jethro Tull. Actually, several of my favorite bands are from the 70s (Wire, The Jam, Joy Division, Lee Perry) but they don't have quite the mainsteam impact of those 60s powerhouses. Bottom line, we're not going to get another Spike Jonze of Michel Gondry - the industry has changed too much. ||

hey trying out a new layout. Please hate it. Also go to boycottmedia.com; the site of Josh Fowler (who has shot a number of projects I've done, including One Block Radius, the Fiona Apple video and the video game [green screen] footage in DJ Format). See me acting as an enemy soldier in WWII plus the 1BR video edited to a hardcore song here. ||

09-13-05
hey added a current mp3 - Bruno Nicolai "Allora Li Treno." More crap in lieu of waves of videos. ||

09-12-05
hey look this is like a real BLOG entry: The most fun class I had in film school was called Sight & Sound Video. In LA I hang out w/ two of the guys from this class, Andy Herman and Matt White; and we'll often talk about classmates and forgotten projects. The Holy Grail of this video class is a video that Dan O'Meara directed. I acted in it, alongside classmates Keith Tomlin and Dan Bonneville. It was 6 or so people on stage lip syncing a song from RENT and upon viewing it for the first time, I was on the floor laughing. Anyway, I never got a copy of RENT and 7 years later (!) we're conducting a lazy search to get a hold of it. If anyone has any info about Dan O'Meara, please contact me. Here is a video of him acting with Jon Gilbert in a project I did. Warning: it sucks. ||

09-10-05
hey so I added a new section full of ridiculous namedropping videos; the link embedded somewhere in the news. Go fucking nuts. ||

04-16-05
hey here is the most amusing DJ Format video review: "There isn’t much hope for us game geeks. Part of our lot in life is to be misunderstood and incorrectly categorized as outcasts. Uncool. Hipless. So, it’s always surprising to see a couple of gamers put on a convincing front. DJ Format featuring Abdominal & D-Sisive “3 Feet Deep” is a duo’s music video that takes an arcade, two guys who could be you and me, and a beat that should be played many times. Play it. These guys are worth the bandwidth." so is the video so well directed that MCs are convincing as video gamers or so poorly directed that MCs come across as video gamers making a rap video you decide.

04-12-05
hey so here are links to some of the artists page - DJ Format, One Block Radius,The Notwist, I Am the World Trade Center, Atom and his Package and Nothing Special; the Movielife broke up.

hey Vijay complained that I don't update this enough - how's that FLOG coming along, Vijay???

08-31-04
hey so I can't believe it but I actually watched the whole MTV Video awards well actually I fastforwarded through a lot of the performances and yeah big surprise these awards sucked. D12 "My Band" up for video of the year? What the fuck? Okay Outkast "Hey Ya" is enjoyable but c'mon it's the exact same concept as Nirvana's "In Bloom" which was actually shot on the old-time tube cameras. And I swear I've seen another video where it was one guy playing all the instruments. What's crazy is this year we had 3 excellent Gondry videos (White Stripes "Button to Button", Steriogram's "Walkie Talkie Man" and Gary Jules "Mad World"); not to mention the Chemical Brothers "Get Yourself High" video, and who wins the breakthrough video award? Franz Ferdinand doing an After Effects video. Sigh.

08-27-04
hey yeah yeah yeahs Spike Jonze channels Chris Cunningham- doesn't this video seem like you dreamt it existed and then woke up and realized it didn't??

08-25-04
hey let's change previous entries

08-23-04
hey I almost think that a video has to sit for a few years before it can be canonized; but here are some of the best videos of the last few years. Incidentally, I'm not a huge fan of any of the songs - which is to say, the video transcends the song.
The Chemical Brothers "Get Yourself High" Dir: Joseph Kahn - Not even Gondry's "Light and Day" can top this.
Futureshock "Late at Night" Dir: Jake Knight and Ryoko Tanaka - on a technical level, it's not too complicated - it's a brilliant idea.
Jay-Z "99 Luftballoons" Dir: Mark Romanek - how many days did it take to shoot this?

08-16-04
hey the shoot was bananas so wet your appetite with this video still of a bunch of kids lying down in traffic. jarts, jarts, jarts.

08-13-04
hey tommorrow is gonna be hot everyone wear sunscreen

07-28-04
hey I got the Remote DVD from Alexandre Singh who won the 'You Won't See This on MTV' Award for his video for Gwem, "Fuck You Management Wanker."

07-27-04
hey I came across the REMOTE DVD Magazine at Hypefest and was blown away. These reviews pretty much sum it up:

"The Remote Beta Edition DVD consists of a bunch of stuff that you would see on MTV3 if you were watching it at 4:35 AM. Since there is no such thing as MTV3, the good people at Remote decided to provide a place to see obscure videos, short films and animation that would otherwise rarely be seen."
Vapors, Dec/Jan 2003

"Remote a new, and fucking fantastic idea. It's a free DVD comp that will feature short films, animations, and rarely seen music videos. I really hope they don't blow it on this one, 'cause this is a great idea."
Alarm Press, Jan 2003

07-25-04
hey fuck yeah the Notwist video won the DIY award at Hypefest!

07-18-04
hey the Notwist video is in HypeFest this weekend in LA and I think part of this Canadian Indie Music Video Festival in San Diego.

hey the screenings went great and people even asked questions like why did you use a jellyfish?

06-16-04
hey the Notwist video is playing at the (IFP) Los Angeles Film Festival on Fri. June 18, 4:30pm, DGA 2 and Sun. June 20, 4:45pm, DGA 2.

hey who doesn't know that the best music video director of all time is Michel Gondry?

06-07-04
hey I ate a pancake today.

06-06-04
hey so this blog will focus primarily on music videos; no crap about what I had for breakfast or anything.

06-05-04
